Current Connections: Robin Roberts
Cancer, an evil disease that spreads like wildfire, is all around us. Every day, numerous individuals are diagnosed with the sickness, or worse...killed by it. Robin Roberts is one of many. Five years ago she was diagnosed with breast cancer. Currently, she is on a medical leave from her job, hosting Good Morning America, due to her latest diagnosis, Myelodysplastic Syndrome (MDS). I can personally relate to this situation because my Papa-Mike just recently passed away of Esophageal Cancer.
Cancer is a very serious disease and treatments are harsh. Well, if you are able to take treatments that is. MDS is a disease of bone marrow and blood, formerly known as preleukemia. For right now, she is taking “pre-treatment chemotherapy in advance of a bone marrow transplant later this year.” I think it is wonderful that Robin is so open about her diagnosis of MDS and in the past, breast cancer. It can be very motivational for other fighters and survivors. She has remained positive throughout all of it and has been thankful for prayers and supporters. Robin even said “when I faced breast cancer, your prayers and good wishes sustained me, gave me such hope and played a major role in my recovery.” With this new sickness Robin has even asked “humbly for more of your prayers and love - as I will keep you in mine.”
Absolutely nobody deserves to have cancer. However, it is still a part of our daily lives and the victims still have to cope with it. Unlike Robin, Papa-Mike chose to keep his illness pretty private. For his disease, cancer of the esophagus, he underwent chemotherapy and some surgeries. Papa-Mike was pretty involved in his job like Robin. He established Kendall Financial Consultants and did his work at Citizens Bank here in Batesville. Not many people knew about Papa-Mike having cancer. He preferred that it was kept private due to his business. Eventually, he had to step down from work as well. Even though Papa-Mike did not make his illness public,
he still had faith and fought like Robin Roberts. They both fought their hardest...just in different ways.
I suppose what I am trying to say is that sadly, cancer is not a rare thing. It seems as if it is normal. Honestly, I bet that everyone can relate to it one way or another. So for those who are fighting, do not give up, have faith, and you can find your way to get through this!
